Jane's Addictions, Chapter 1 Part 1

So I was digging in my WIP files, looking for something to enter into a writing contest, when I stumbled across this jem: Jane's Addictions, a Talbot's Peak story I wrote a couple years ago. So, since I've been as busy as a one-legged man in a butt kicking contest, I thought I'd go ahead and repost it one chunk at a time.

Chapter 1

Hannibal glanced up when he heard Bambi open the door to the Ranger Station. Then he did a double-take so fast he almost gave himself whiplash. His longtime friend and coworker was no metrosexual by any means, but he was a mule deer and mulies tended to be very neat about their appearance. At 5’10” and 160 lbs, Bambi had the sleek build to pass himself off as a model in his US Forestry Service uniform. Most of the time. At the moment, Bambi was covered in paintball splatters, bird shit, and goat hair. Bo was pretty certain he hadn’t looked like that when he left the station for his regular patrol.

Sapria emerged from a relaxing shower. She smiled as she toweled off her faintly striped skin. Being a zebra shapeshifter, her stripes showed whenever her body temperature heated up.

Several years ago, she'd given up being with human men. The explanations about her stripes had worn thin as a late winter pasture. So, when the opportunity to move to Talbot's Peak territory, and work at the Pleasure Club, had shown up unexpectedly, she'd jumped at it. No, she'd raced toward it.

Sapria reached for the bathrobe, and slipped into the all-engulfing white terry. She let a long sigh escape further relaxing her shoulder muscles. While she enjoyed being a server at the Midnight Stardust Club, they'd been unusually busy this past week.

Hi all, well another shorty from me...actually, it may be shorty's for a while on my front.  I've been dealing with a problimatic hand and wrist for the entire summer and am now getting PT for it.  I'd initially thought it was carpel, but happily I was wrong!

Anyway, exercises and periodic splinting has been called for, so my typing time is limited for now.

I hope you enjoy Nick and Ziva's continuing trial in short spurts.

By the by, the picture has nothing to do with today's blog, but it just felt like a good day to admire this classic shot.  ~sigh~

Nick stood beside his brother and behind his nephews watching as, together, they culled the young deer from the herd.  Damn those boys were good.  It really shouldn’t surprise him considering they were McMahons.

Afternoon yowls and mews, late-summer sensational KitKats... so, the tame prairie has heated up again, but so far, it's not a nasty heat... but certainly more summer like... so, the Kougaress is enjoying the butterflies and birdies, and walking through her little back-to-nature spot... and she's trying to get her ducks in a row for the upcoming winter... with all the chaos-breakdown of society, who knows what is down the proverbial pike... and wow, the insomnia has been brutal for the last few nights... this Big Cat is looking for better solutions... one more thing to do on her overcrowded to-do list... but that's life in these quickening times.

Keep preparing for the superstorms of life, most darling kittens. It's getting rougher and nastier out there. But just remember this Big Cat loves ya!

Alessandra Moore sipped her drink and let her gaze wander over the other diners in the Rocky Top Motel’s restaurant. She tried to look with her casual, I’m-not-working-right-now eye, but her professional, let’s-see-what-we’ve-got-here eye kept getting in the way. That tended to happen whenever Less found herself between jobs. Like now.

Overall, the pickings here were slim. Well, she should have expected that from a motel restaurant off an interstate exit in rural Montana. Transients, truckers, businessmen on their way to one coast or the other and families on vacation weren’t going to yield many possibilities. As for the locals, forget it. They were attractive enough, in a rugged, animalistic sort of way, but the cowboy look was over and had been even before she left Chicago. If she was going to wow ‘em in LA, it wouldn’t be with anyone she found in this backwater cowtown.
